What are the Reds thinking??? Why would you take an advanced 1B bat, Yonder Alonso, with your first pick, particularly when Gordon Beckham is still on the board? Even pitching, or one of the catchers would have made more sense. Granted, I'm not wowed by any of the pitchers in this draft class.
The Reds are committed to Joey Votto at first. He's already living up to expectations in his rookie season, and will only continue to get better. What happens now in two years when Alonso is ready for the Majors? They're both first basemen. We're not talking about versatile athletes who can move around the diamond. Guys wind up at first because they aren't great athletes, but you want their bat in the lineup.
Very disappointed in the Reds. The White Sox got a steal in Gordon Beckham with the 8th pick. |
